SUG President Sparks Controversy with Political Appointments

Bilal Abdullahi       Monday, July 17, 2023

Benson Abasifreke Nseobong, the president of the Students Union Government (SUG) at Akwa Ibom State University, has found himself at the center of a heated debate after appointing 30 special advisers and aides to his cabinet. The list of appointments, which was shared on Twitter by activist and lawyer Iniebehe Effiong, quickly went viral and elicited a range of reactions from the public.

The appointments made by Nseobong encompass various sectors, reflecting his intention to have a diverse team to steer the affairs of the SUG.

The special advisers are assigned to key areas such as media and publicity, transportation and campus mobilization, royal matters, health and students' welfare, sports, and legislative matters.

Additionally, the list includes other positions such as chief of staff, chief press secretary, clerk to the assembly, women leader, and chairman of the union board of trustees, among others.

The public response to these appointments has been divided, with differing opinions surfacing on social media platforms.

While some individuals see no issue with the extensive list and believe it will enable Nseobong to effectively fulfill his duties, others express concerns over its length and potential implications.

Efforts to obtain comments from Nseobong regarding the appointments have been unsuccessful thus far.

Twitter users have been actively engaging with the topic, sharing their thoughts and viewpoints. One user, @iamjohnreuben, defended the appointments, stating, "I see nothing wrong with this if it will make him function effectively. Secondly they are not paid, and it helps those students appointed to develop a sense of leadership and responsibility."

Echoing a similar sentiment, @Its_Olayinnka commented, "There's nothing bad in this list. It's not like they are getting paid for their services. I feel it will even make him function more effectively."

However, not everyone is supportive of the SUG president's appointments. User @Mayor_of_lfe voiced skepticism, stating, "On top SUG? If this one catches Nigeria."

The concerns raised by critics suggest a need for further discussions surrounding the necessity and potential impact of such a substantial number of appointments within the student union.

The SUG president's controversial appointments have drawn attention to the intersection of student politics and governance, sparking an ongoing debate about the appropriateness and effectiveness of such decisions.

As discussions continue, it remains to be seen how these appointments will impact the Akwa Ibom State University SUG and its operations moving forward. Share this story on Facebook!
