In a bid to challenge gender stereotypes and bridge the gender gap in engineering, the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) is urging female students to embrace the field of engineering. The call was made by Muibat Yahya, Chairman of the Niger State chapter of APWEN, during an event where the association honored outstanding female students who excelled in a science competition.
Yahya highlighted the unfortunate trend of female students shying away from studying engineering due to the perception that it is a male-dominated profession.
She emphasized the need to change this mindset and encourage more young women, particularly those in public secondary schools, to pursue careers in engineering and the sciences.
"We have observed that female students tend to avoid studying engineering because they believe it is exclusively meant for males. We are determined to transform this perception and inspire female students to take up engineering," stated Yahya.
As a step toward achieving this goal, APWEN recognized Maryam Zubairu from Government Girls Secondary School, Minna, for her outstanding performance in a science competition organized by the association.
Maryam emerged as the top female student in science among over 50 participants from various schools across Niger State. Osioje Goodman of Government Day Secondary School Maikunkele and Ezenweta Anita of Government Girls Secondary School, Old Airport secured the second and third positions, respectively.
Elizabeth Eterigho, President of APWEN, commended the Niger State chapter of APWEN for initiating the award and emphasized that it celebrated the remarkable achievements, dedication, and unwavering determination displayed by these young female secondary school students.
She stressed the importance of empowering young women to excel in the sciences and engineering, which are fields critical to national development.
The recognition and encouragement provided by APWEN's initiative aim to inspire female students and challenge societal norms that restrict their choices in education and careers.
By promoting inclusivity and diversity in engineering, APWEN is working towards creating a more equitable and balanced landscape in the profession.
The association's efforts align with a global movement that seeks to break down gender barriers and foster equal opportunities for women in traditionally male-dominated fields.
Through mentorship programs, awareness campaigns, and advocacy, APWEN is making significant strides in creating an enabling environment for female students to pursue their passion for engineering and contribute their talents to the nation's development.
