The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has joined the chorus of voices calling for a comprehensive review of Nigeria's educational curriculum.

According to UNESCO's director of the International Bureau of Education, Ydo Yao, the present curriculum is outdated and overloaded, and urgent action is required to make it relevant to the present-day realities of Nigeria.

During a capacity development training, Ydo Yao emphasized the need for a curriculum that ensures quality in education while fostering the development of values, knowledge, and skills.

Recognizing the ongoing education crisis, UNESCO aims to provide solutions that address the challenges faced by Nigeria's educational sector.

In response to concerns raised about the curriculum, Olamide Mogaji, a representative of UNESCO, stated that the curriculum is currently not relevant and needs to adapt to the changing times.

She stressed the importance of updating the curriculum to reflect the evolving needs of students, highlighting the growing importance of soft skills and emotional intelligence in today's world.

Mogaji emphasized the need to shift the focus from theoretical knowledge to practical skills, urging the inclusion of training on emotional intelligence in schools.

To remain competitive on a global scale, Nigeria must align its curriculum with international standards and ensure that it stands the test of time.

While acknowledging the numerous conferences and seminars held in the past, Mogaji stated that UNESCO is committed to engaging stakeholders at the highest levels to find effective solutions.

Key areas of concern include addressing the funding challenges faced by the educational sector and collaborating with relevant stakeholders to initiate curriculum reforms that meet the demands of the present era.

The call for a curriculum review by UNESCO highlights the urgent need for Nigeria to adapt its educational system to meet the demands of the modern world.

By prioritizing the development of relevant skills and knowledge, Nigeria can equip its students with the tools necessary to thrive in today's rapidly changing society.

Through collaboration and active engagement with stakeholders, UNESCO aims to facilitate the necessary changes that will pave the way for a brighter future for Nigeria's education system. Share this report on Facebook!
