On the 20th of June, 2023, Bayero University, Kano played host to a crucial Regional Strategy Validation Workshop focused on ratifying Disbursement Linked Indicator 7.1, a vital component designed by the World Bank and the Association of African Universities.
The workshop aimed to present the Draft report of the regional strategy document, aiming to achieve the Disbursement Linked Indicator 7.1, with the active participation of key stakeholders in the university.
During the workshop, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, the Vice Chancellor, presented the DLI 7 document, stressing the World Bank's requirement that Academic Centres of Excellence (ACEs) should make a positive impact on their institutions.
The overarching objective is to enhance high-quality training, foster robust regional partnerships, and conduct research with high impact to address developmental challenges in Africa.
Representing the Vice Chancellor, Professor Mahmud Umar Sani, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Management Services, highlighted the significance of the University Management's support in achieving the objectives of the ACEs - the Centre for Dryland Agriculture (CDA) and the Africa Centre of Excellence for Population Health and Policy (ACEPHAP). He praised their performance and achievements.
The workshop was chaired by Professor Mustapha Ahmad Isa, who outlined the committee's responsibilities, which included reviewing the functions and activities of the CDA and ACEPHAP, and then drafting a document for achieving the DLI. The workshop facilitated valuable feedback from stakeholders directly or indirectly involved in the centers' activities.
Professor Amina Mustapha, the CDA Deputy Director for Outreach and Publications, presented the Draft Regional Strategy 2023-2028. Stakeholders actively contributed their input and made significant suggestions to enhance the document.
Addressing the attendees in his welcome speech, Professor Jibrin Mohammed Jibrin, the Director of CDA, highlighted the workshop's importance in meeting the DLI 7 requirement, emphasizing the significance of achieving excellence and making a positive impact at the university.
The Regional Strategy Validation Workshop at Bayero University, Kano, brought together key stakeholders and experts, reinforcing the commitment to foster excellence in academic training, build robust regional partnerships, and address Africa's developmental challenges with impactful research.
The collaboration between the World Bank, the Association of African Universities, and the university management signals a promising step towards a brighter future for higher education in the region.
