The Centre for Dryland Agriculture (CDA), Bayero University, Kano in collaboration with the Agro-Processing Productivity Enhancement and Livelihood Improvement Support Project (APPEALS) has trained one thousand youth and women from Kano and Kogi state on three agricultural value chains of fisheries, poultry and rice.
The participants comprised of 600 trainees from Kano and 400 others from Kogi State. The first batch of the training, which commenced last week, had 200 participants from Kogi and 300 from Kano, while the second batch will have 300 from Kano and 200 from Kogi State.
The training, which is a 14-day exercise, is an empowerment programme aimed at reducing unemployment, providing job opportunities and teaching wealth creation for youth and women in order to have sustainable means of livelihood.
The Kogi State Commissioner for Agriculture, Honourable O. Kehinde, who declared open the training for Kogi State participants on Thursday, 12th December, 2019 at the Conference Hall of the Students Affairs of BUK, congratulated the beneficiaries from his state for being selected into the programme.
He urged them to be good ambassadors of Kogi State by showing good character and paying maximum attention to the training. The Commissioner assured the beneficiaries that at the end of the programme they would be able to employ many people who are unemployed.
The Kogi State Training Coordinator of the programme, Dr. Sanni Abdullahi Ozomata, urged the beneficiaries to take full advantage of the training and said that the APPEALS Project would support them through production, processing and marketing of their products.
He commended the CDA for being at the forefront of providing the short term training aimed at addressing challenges of manpower development. The Director, CDA, Professor Jibrin M. Jibrin, in his welcome remarks, told the participants brief history of the centre and its tripartite activities of research, training and outreach.
Also, speaking, the Deputy Director, Outreach and Publication, Professor Amina Mustapha, said the CDA was happy to collaborate with APPEALS to conduct the training. She said the aim of the training was to complement government's effort at tackling the challenges of unemployment and poverty alleviation.
The CDA organized the orientation programme for Kano participants on Monday, 16th December, 2019 in which the Deputy Director, Outreach and Publications, Professor Mustapha, made a presentation on the overview of the training while Malam Jazuli Mukhtar Bichi presented a lecture on Gender Based Violence.
The Kano State Project Coordinator, Malam Hassan Ibrahim, called on the participants to pay maximum attention and to learn the skills of their respective value chain, failure to do which would lead to their suspension from the training.
He said the choice of CDA to train the participants was because of its capacity of being a strategic Africa centre of excellence with quality manpower and state of the art facilities that can compete anywhere in the world.
