BUK NEWS: CDA Organizes International Workshop on Remote Sensing

  BUKdaily       Monday, September 9, 2019

The Centre for Dryland Agriculture in collaboration with the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) organized a five-day workshop on the Application of Remote Sensing in Semi-

Arid Tropics (SAT) using Machine Learning Algorithms and Spectral Matching Techniques (SMTS) from 26 to 30 August, 2019. Some of the objectives of the training were to introduce participants to the

potential application of GEE for remote sensing and Geographical Information System in agriculture and other thematic areas and to demonstrate a hands-on training on machine learning algorithms

embedded in GEE interface for geospatial processing and image classification. The workshop would enable the participants to gain practical knowledge of operating the machines and familiarize them with

available resources for continued learning of earth engine concepts and establish GEE user group. The training attracted participants from ICRISAT, India and Kano Office, Zonal Advanced Space Technology

Application Laboratory and staff of the Department of Geography, as well as CDA. Declaring the workshop open, the Deputy Director, Outreach and Publication of the

CDA,  Professor Amina Mustapha, welcomed the participants and charged them to make good use of the opportunity and learn a lot from the facilitators. She

described the training as a good opportunity to gain knowledge, especially from the experienced facilitators from India. In his remarks, the Director, ICRISAT,

Kano Office, Dr. Hakim Ajiegbe, described the workshop as an effective collaboration between ICRISAT and CDA, aimed at producing more expertise in the area of remote sensing and geographical

information system. He further stated that this kind of opportunity was rare because of the limited funds and expertise in the area. The leader of the facilitators of the training workshop, Dr. Murali Krishna

Gumma, said he was happy with the way participants paid maximum attention to the training, emphasizing that with the synergy of CDA and ICRISAT, the former would soon become a centre of excellence in GIS and

remote sensing in Nigeria. Dr. Gumma, who is the ICRISAT's head of Remote Sensing/GIS Lab Systems Analysis for Climate Smart Agriculture Research Program Innovation Systems for the Drylands, said the

participants would, among other things, be exposed to comprehensive knowledge and information of the Google earth engine platform. Other facilitators of the workshop

were Dr Bhavani Pinjarta, a Scientific Officer, Remote Sensing/GIS Lab of ICRISATand Pranay Panjala, also from ICRISAT.
